There are few things as beautiful as a butterfly in the garden. Louisiana is home to 154 native species of butterfly, PLUS 476 moth species, which also pollinate and frequent our landscapes. Butterflies and moths are members of the insect family Lepodoptera. While some caterpillars of butterflies and moths can become agricultural pests, the vast majority are not. Adult members of Lepodoptera have tubular mouthparts that sip nectar. Their larvae have chewing mouthparts and need to consume plant foliage in order to grow, form a chrysalis, and eventually transform to a butterfly or moth through a process called metamorphosis. The key to attracting butterflies to your garden to watch and enjoy is providing plenty of nectar plants for the adults, as well as suitable host plants for the caterpillars to consume. Butterfly gardening can be a rewarding hobby and provides entertainment as well as educational value for all who participate, especially children.
