Heyward James Unbehagen, of Chalmette, Louisiana, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on March 15, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Heyward's life was a melody of joy and resilience which resonated with all who knew him. Heyward was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Anasthasia Unbehagen; his beloved wife, Sandra Lea Smith, with whom he shared eight years of marriage; one son, Randall Max Unbehagen; two stepchildren, Harry Derouen Jr. and Brenda Acosta; and three siblings, Elsie Fabron, Horace J. Leonard Jr., and Emmett Unbehagen. Heyward leaves behind, to cherish his memory, two children, Travis Joseph Unbehagen and Kelly Denise Unbehagen; his stepdaughter, Gidget Derouen; his sisters, Sheila Couture and Stephanie Nunez; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members. Heyward's professional life was marked by dedication and service, having retired from his role as a supervisor in the oil industry. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and kindness, whose presence uplifted those around him. A self-taught organist, Heyward found solace and joy in the keys of his beloved instrument. His love for playing the organ was infectious, and he often became the heart of gatherings, filling rooms with the sound of his impromptu performances. Heyward will be remembered as a loving individual, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many. His ability to see the good in others, to extend a helping hand, and to offer a comforting word, are the hallmarks of his character that will be greatly missed.
