Dr. Andrew J. Englande, Jr., a talented artist and mentor to many, peacefully entered eternal rest surrounded by his family on September 16, 2026. He was married for over 60 years to the love of his life and his greatest supporter, Bonnie Bellande Englande; the father of Deborah Englande Gros and Kevin Michael Englande (Allyson) and father- in-law of Lori Illg Englande. Known as Poppa to his precious grandchildren: Stephen Michael Gros, Ashley Englande Cardona (Ian), Ryleigh Englande Gros, Andrew (Drew) Joseph Englande IV, Alex Raymond Englande, Margaret (Maggie) Grace Guidry and Caroline Elizabeth Englande. Born in New Orleans on July 31, 1944, A.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Joseph and Lorraine Rasch Englande; his son Andrew (Andy) Joseph Englande, III; and his son-in-law, Randolph (Randy) Perry Gros. He is survived by his siblings Larry Peter Englande (Peggy) and Clifford Michael Englande (Cindy), Lorraine Margie Englande and Laura Englande Scallan and a host of other family members. A.J. moved to St. Bernard Parish when he was a teenager. In 1963 he graduated from F.T. Nicholls High School in New Orleans. He received his Bachelor Degree and Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Tulane University. Although he continued his studies at the University of Austin in Texas, he finished his Ph.D. in Environmental and Wastewater Resources Engineering at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. After living in Chalmette, LA for over 40 years, he and Bonnie relocated to Madisonville, LA after Hurricane Katrina. For 42 years A.J. was a professor of Global Environmental Health Sciences at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans. Many of his former students became lifelong friends. His research and lectures on wastewater management, water quality and biomediation took him to such areas as Thailand, Australia, China, Columbia and Brazil. He loved traveling and visited over 45 countries. Earning the Eagle Boy Scout rank, becoming a WEF Fellow, a Fulbright Scholar and receiving the W. Wesley Eckenfelder Industrial Water Quality Lifetime Achievement Award are to name a few of his accomplishments. He was an advocate for clean water and wastewater management. One of the books he co-authored on industrial water quality is used in many university classrooms today. He published over 150 papers dealing with environmental sustainability and wastewater treatment. After retiring from Tulane, he continued to consult. A.J. had a tremendous impact on the lives and careers of many. While he loved mentoring people from all walks of life, painting was his passion. Oils were his medium and many of his paintings are displayed around the world. A.J. enjoyed listening and dancing to different types of music. He began each morning reading daily meditations and the Bible. He lived in the present and took the saying 'One Day at a Time' to heart. He was a humble, giving individual and a loyal friend. He was loved and will truly be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in A.J.'s memory to the American Cancer Society, Friends of Bill W. or the ALS Foundation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend service at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Madisonville, LA on Thursday, September 24, 2026. Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral mass follows. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Abbey, St. Benedict, LA.
