Garrett David Harrell, Jr., a native New Orleanian, was born December 18, 1990 to Kimberly and the late Garrett Harrell, Sr. He passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 in an automobile accident in Vinton, La., at the age of 33. Garrett grew up in Boscoville where he continued to live. He attended John F. Kennedy High School (he loved his dad's alma mater), but he graduated from McDonogh #35 High School, post Hurricane Katrina. He then spent a short time at Southeastern University, in Hammond, before returning to New Orleans. Garrett was employed at Pampy's Live Oak Restaurant and Bar, The Sheraton Hotel, The Chalmette Chemical Plant and the Port of New Orleans. His best times were the times he spent laughing and joking with family and friends. He had the sweetest heart and the gentlest demeanor. Everybody loved 'Gee.'
His family was hands down the core of his world. Kiara, his fiancé and lifelong soulmate, who stood by his side with endearing love for 20 years was – without a doubt – his world. Their four beautiful children, Garrett, III (10), twins Gia and GiGi (9) and Ghai (3) were his heartbeats. He was a great, doting dad and his children truly adored him. His mom, Kimberly, was also his best friend. Garrett was the middle child and only son. He held a special place in his mother's heart. His older sister, Brandy, and younger sister, Gabrielle, meant the world to him too. He treated them like queens and the three siblings shared a tremendously special bond. In addition to his mother Kimberly, Garrett is also survived by and will be deeply missed by many, namely his grandmother, Lydia Foy; grandfather Melvin Winins, Sr; fiancé Kiara Lee; children Garrett Harrell III, Gia, GiGi and Ghai Harrell; Sisters Brandy Augustin (DJ), Gabrielle Harrell (Yusef); Mother-in-Love, Mildred 'MamaMill'; Sister-in-love Ashley Thomas (Alvin); Godparents Kendra Edgerson-Reine 'Nanny Love' and Clarence Colemen; nieces and nephews, Kailey, Tori, Darryl 'Trey' III and Chase Augustin; Yusef and Yuri Scipio; six aunts and uncles as well as a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to his father, the most honorable and beloved, Garrett D. Harrell Sr., Garrett is also preceded in death by grandmothers, Mary Barbara Harrell, Celina 'Mamoo' and Emma Colvon; aunt, Stephanie Harrell; uncles, Glen Harrell and Alfred Harrell, Jr.
A light has gone out of our lives, but the love Garrett gave will shine forever. Relatives and friends of the family attended a Celebration Service and Repast honoring the life and legacy of the late Mr. Garrett D. Harrell, Jr., held at Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip St., in New Orleans, La., on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. Interment: Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in the family plot.
