Jeannette Anne Prague La Bédoyère Huchet de Kernion Bancroft went to her eternal rest on July 12, 2024. She was 78. She is survived by her children: Ryan (Jan), Sean (Amy) and Lauren Bancroft; daughter-in-law Julie Bancroft; six grandchildren: Sarah, Rachel, Matthew, Kathryn, Emily and Cameryn Bancroft; brothers Edwin 'Jeb' (Vicky) Kernion, Jr. and Jonathan (Lynn, d.) Kernion; sisters Jennifer Kernion (Doug) Taylor and Jeannine Kernion (Rick) Rauch, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son, Justin Bancroft, and by her parents: Edwin Joseph Kernion, Sr. and Blanche Gordon Kernion. Jeannette was born in New Orleans and attended both Mount Carmel Academy and St. Joseph Academy, graduating with the class of 1963. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, completing her RN in 1966 at Hotel Dieu School of Nursing, and later completed her BSN at Loyola University. She had a long and storied career as a registered nurse, from the floors of a Charity Hospital before air conditioning, to the kitchen tables of the countless families she cared for during her years in home health. She was Director of Nursing at De La Ronde Hospital, while assisting as a surgical nurse nearby at Chalmette Medical Center. She spent several years as an adjunct nursing consultant in medical malpractice law, and later returned to Charity Hospital to lecture on anatomy and physiology to many students who remain healthcare professionals today. During those years, she always prioritized the care of friends and family in times of ill health, and was a skilled, compassionate and gifted nurse in every sense of the word. Jeannette was an accomplished mezzo- soprano and loved sharing her beautiful voice in her parish church choir, and at milestone events. She was a dedicated animal lover, an archivist who could be counted upon to recall every family anecdote, a grower of African violets, and a formidable opponent at Scrabble. She will be remembered always for her sympathetic nature, dedication to family, and her excellent sense of humor. Family, friends and associates are invited to attend the Catholic Memorial Service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, La. Visitation begins at 11 a.m., and will continue until service time. Interment: Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum, New Orleans, La. In lieu of flowers, pleaseconsider a donation in her name to the Northshore Humane Society, a nokill shelter in Covington, where Jeannette spent many hours as a volunteer.
