Nelson Simon, affectionately nicknamed 'JJ,' departed this life on October 1, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on November 14, 1954, he was the beloved son of the late Joe Simon and Anna Louise Simon. Nelson was a devoted family man with a pure heart of gold. He was known for his kindness, wisdom, hardworking spirit, and the sound advice he freely shared with those around him. He was the kind of man people could turn to for guidance, and his words had a way of staying to you long after the conversation ended. Nelson worked at Audubon Zoo Institute for more than 40 years, where his many years of service reflected the loyal, dependable, and committed man his family knew him to be. Nelson also found great joy and peace in nature. He loved gardening, plants, greenery, and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed caring for the things he grew, and in many ways, that reflected the way he cared for the people in his life. Through his love, guidance, and wisdom, Nelson planted lessons that will continue to grow for generations. For more than 40 years, Nelson shared his life with his longtime companion and the love of his life, Beatrice Carter. Their years together were filled with companionship, family, memories, and enduring love. Beatrice held a treasured place in Nelson's heart, and he cherished the life they shared. Nelson was the loving father of Rachael S. G. Bankston, wife of Darryl Bankston Sr., and Jamesha A. Simon. He leaves to cherish his memory of his grandchildren, Kawyski T. Smith Jr., Erykah L. Smith, Terrence T. Griffin Jr., Sarah D. Griffin, Amelia A. Griffin, and Aiden A. Griffin; one greatgrandchild, Kayden T. Griffin. He also leaves to cherish his memory his brothers, Ruffin Simon; Larry A. Simon and his wife, Shermel Simon; Alton Simon and his wife, Patricia Simon; Jerome Simon and his wife, Barbara Simon; and Reginald L. Simon and his wife, Pansey Simon; and his sisters, Linda M. Smith and her husband, Kennith Smith; and Mary L. Davis and her husband, James Bertrand. Nelson also shared a special and loving relationship with Jamesha's grandchildren, Janaya 'Naya' Bates and Bevon Bates Jr. 'BJ.' Their bond held a special place in his heart, and they join his family in carrying his memory forward. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Simon and Anna Louise Simon. Two brothers, the late Joseph Simon and Cornell A. Simon. His memory will also be lovingly cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. Those who knew Nelson will remember his generous heart, his conversations, his love for family and nature, and especially the wisdom and advice he was always willing to share. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Wednesday, October 14th from 9:00AM - 11:00AM, followed by a celebration of Nelson's life beginning at 11:00AM.
