I’ve just about lost the fight with squash vine borers (Melittia cucurbitae) which love to tear into summer squash, zucchini, patty pan squash, and other cucurbit crops this time of year. They are a moth and go through several generations in the warm season- laying their eggs on the underside of the leaves, and the resulting larvae boring into the hollow stems to feed, which typically leads to the decline of the crop. I’ve seen many home remedies for keeping vine borers out, such as fitting a collar made from tin foil over each vine base. Not sure that one really works. Other control methods include regular application of an insecticide to the base of the plant, such as bT Thuricide or Spinosad, using a mesh row cover to screen the adults out, which prevents the laying of eggs, and manual removal by slitting the vines open and fishing out the larvae.

At their June 6 meeting, the St. Bernard Parish Government (SBPG) council unanimously passed an introduction from district E council member Fred Everhardt to amend his ordinance banning imported shrimp in the parish, expanding what is covered by the ordinance and adding a few details to clarify enforcement.
