A Long Road with a New Journey Ahead

Body
In our journey in life, we cross paths with many people. There is a moment of surprise when you meet someone unique that you can eventually call a friend. That is just what happened to me more than a decade ago. I finally met the person who raised cattle in the pastures along St. Bernard Highway. That very cowboy person was Louis Pomes, a seemingly St. Bernard style horseman. No, he was not a western cowboy waiting for the next cattle drive but someone who understood ranching near a big city. His day job was a very important one to the community, keeping the storm water out and St. Bernard Parish dry from all the rainwater. Talent for evaluating a problem and fixing it is a true trait. His demeanor is always polite with a constant smile when he greets you. A complementary expression that we use on a rare occasion is someone is “salt of the earth,” that certainly applies to Pomes.

New Year Thoughts from the Bayou State

Body
Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I always do. A New Year always brings with it promise and uncertainty, but this coming year brings with it a greater foreboding than we have experienced in the past. The Chinese have a saying: “May you live in interesting times.” But their definition means dangerous or turbulent. We in Louisiana and throughout America certainly live in “interesting” times today.

We are about to celebrate New Year 2024. Generally, we experience joy as we look forward to the coming year and dream of the advantages and opportunities it will bring.
