Henry Johannes “Buddy” Gonlag, Jr., a cherished family man and respected member of the community, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, in Slidell, La., at the age of 70. He was a resident of Picayune, Ms., and a former resident of St. Bernard, La. He was born on September 12, 1953, in New Orleans, La. Henry is the beloved husband of Marchia Gonlag, with whom he shared 50 years of unwavering love and companionship. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and cherished memories. He was a devoted father to his three children, Raquel Naquin (Travis), Bridget Gonlag (Emilio Roddy), and Henry Johannes 'Buddy' Gonlag III (Lisa); a devoted grandfather to Tyler Topey, Blair Rossignol (Austin), Noah Aguilera, Madalyn Gonlag, Jake Naquin, Malaina Gonlag, Elisa Roddy, and Blair Naquin; and a loving great-grandfather to Ashlyn Topey, Max Hilderbrand, and Tripp Hilderbrand. Being a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and he embraced every moment with them.
Preceded in death by his parents, Henry Johannes Gonlag Sr. and Joann Guepet Gonlag, and his brother, Rory Gonlag, Henry's legacy is carried on through his loving family, including his siblings, Barbara Toups, Vance Gonlag (Brenda), Louise Gonlag, and Harry Goatcher (Cori). He also leaves behind a host of extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved dearly. Henry was a graduate of Francis T. Nichols High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a strong sense of community. He bravely served in the United States Army National Guard. Henry carried his faith in every aspect of life. His work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career as a welder with Sealand Longshoreman Union 2036, where he was held in high regard by his colleagues. A man of many interests, Henry had a passion for antique cars and was an avid movie buff. He enjoyed watching football, especially when it meant cheering on his favorite teams surrounded by friends and family. Above all, Henry cherished the time spent with his family and was always happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Henry's presence was a source of comfort and strength to all who knew him. He was the kind of person who would offer a helping hand without a second thought and greet everyone with a warm smile.
His loving and kind nature made him a pillar in his community and a beacon of light in the lives of his family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell.
