He attended LSU on a track and football scholarship. One of his proudest achievements was being on the 1958 LSU National Championship Team. He was a Tiger fan and supported the team the rest of his life. Geaux Tigers! After college, Herb joined his father in the family business which was started in 1935. They worked hard together to form Lacassagne's Ship Supplies and sold meat, provisions and dairy products to ship chandlers docking in New Orleans on the Mississippi River. In 1962 the business branched out and began serving local school cafeterias including Orleans Parish School Board, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Jefferson Parish School Board, and St. Bernard Parish Schools. They also began to sell Louisiana state agencies, such as state prisons and hospitals. Eventually Lacassagne's began to sell school systems all over Louisiana. He was an inaugural member of the NOAC where he served on the board from 1976 to 1978. He served as the vice-president of NOAC in 1977. Herb loved to cook and entertain. He loved to travel and visited six of the seven continents. His favorite place away from home was PCB-the place to be, where he enjoyed reading by the pool and soaking up the sun. He loved the Saints and was an original season ticket holder. Hook 'em Saints! Herb was heavily involved with the Good Shepherd Golf tournament. He helped raise thousands of dollars each year with his good friend Father Harry Thompson, who started the tournament. He was involved in raising money for the St. Michael's Special School and participated in its Mardi Gras parade every year where he enjoyed handing out beads and doubloons to the children. Herb made friends wherever he went. His friends looked forward to a text from him every birthday and anniversary. That is a legacy that many people will miss. The family would like to thank all the health care workers from Valencia Sitting Service and Hospice Specialists of Louisiana for the excellent care Herb received in his last weeks at home. His friends are invited to a visitation at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18 at Schoen's Funeral Home on Canal St. Herb was a lifelong Catholic and a Mass will be celebrated for him beginning at 1 p.m. by his friend since high school, Father Bobby Massett. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Good Shepherd School in New Orleans, or St. Michael's Special School in New Orleans. A Salute-God Bless!
