Gregory “Hammer” DiMaggio, Sr., passed away on May 4th at the age of 75 in Sevierville, Tn. He was born in New Orleans on January 7, 1949 and grew up in Arabi, La. He spent most of his life in St. Bernard parish and always missed it when he was away. He loved watching sports of any kind, and he was an avid golfer for many years. The game, and the friends he made because of golf brought him his greatest happiness, and his time with The Vern’s club was some of the best times in his life. He also loved gambling, music, and the corniest comedy movies. He proudly served his country, enlisting in the Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed forces Expeditionary Medal for his time in Korea. He retired from Veolia after having worked as the mechanical maintenance manager within the New Orleans Sewage and Water Board for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold DiMaggio Sr. and Inez Richards DiMaggio, his brother Harold DiMaggio Jr., and his wife of 50 years Vera Bass DiMaggio. He is survived by his children Rebecca St. Philip (Michael) and Gregory DiMaggio Jr. (Kathie), grandchildren Devin DiMaggio, Logan DiMaggio, Joleen DiMaggio, Lannie St. Philip, Cailey St. Philip, two step-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends, including a dear friend Karen Henderson. He will be coming home to the town he loved, and a memorial may be planned for a future date. He really didn’t want any kind of fuss over him so it may just be a round of golf and a toast to Papa.
