Gail Theresa Gervais Schiel

Gail Theresa Gervais Schiel, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 87. She was born on October 3, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Gail was the beloved wife of the late Melvin William Schiel, who passed away almost three years prior. This year would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. She was the loving mother of Sharon Bouché and her husband, Joseph, and Jill Richardson and her husband, Joseph; devoted grandmother, lovingly known as “Mimmy,” of Joseph Bouché III and his wife, Brittany, Cheri Bouché, Andrew Richardson and his wife, Valerie, and Megan Richardson Schwing and her husband, Harris; and proud great-grandmother of Evan Bouché, Emily Bouché, Elise Bouché, Madison Reilly, Aubrey Reilly, Carter Richardson, Lincoln Richardson, Nathan Richardson, Hank Schwing, and Stella Schwing. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews as well as their spouses who she fondly called “The Silbernagel Clan.” Gail was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin William Schiel; her parents, Eldridge Gervais and Josephine Dennis Gervais; her best friend and sister, Geraldine “Gerry” Gervais Silbernagel; brother-in-law, Joseph “Joe” Silbernagel, as well as her loving great-grandson, Ethan Bouché. Gail grew up in New Orleans. She met her forever love, best friend, and soulmate, Melvin “Mel,” at a Mardi Gras Dance during their high school years. They immediately started to date and fell in love. Melvin even switched schools to attend Nichols High School, so they could be together. They married (actually eloped with a few of their high school friends) and settled in the 9th Ward of New Orleans, where they had their two daughters, Sharon and Jill, and later moved to Chalmette in St. Bernard Parish, where they made their home and raised their daughters. They built a house in Buccaneer Villa North, where they made many forever friendships hanging out at the neighborhood BVN swim club. Gail was a member of the ladies organization at Prince of Peace Church during their time in Chalmette until they later moved to Slidell where they became parishioners of St. Luke Parish. Gail started her career working at a bank and later moved on to a career working for the St. Bernard Clerk of Court’s office, where she retired early to become a stay-at-home mom. Gail enjoyed crafting, her weekly “beauty parlor” visits, shopping - lots of shopping, dressing to the tee, and dancing with Mel. Gail was known for her amazing style, and in her later years, rarely went out without being in a fancy skirt and blouse, bling jewelry, hair perfect, nails done, and full makeup. Later in life, you could find Gail and Mel at the casino (or as Gail said in her NOLA accent “casina”) which was their weekend home. Gailwillbedeeplymissedbyall. The family would like to acknowledge the management and staff of Summer-House Park Provence of Slidell, LA, for their devotion and care of Gail for approximately six years (three with Mel) and the past over one year in their amazing memory care unit “Memory Lane” where they made sure she continued to be ‘dressed to the nines’ daily. They were our family! We would also like to acknowledge Foundations Hospice who cared for her alongside Park Provence for the last few months showing her and us the utmost care and grace. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, June 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church located at 400 Westchester Blvd, Slidell, LA 70458. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Private inurnment to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Gardens in Chalmette, LA, at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Audubon Funeral Home of Slidell.
