On May 16, 2025, Moody’s, the bond rating agency, downgraded the credit rating of the United States government for the first time since 1917.

It’s a one-notch downgrade from Aaa to Aa1. Moody’s US rating is now in line with what other credit rating agencies had already done, like S&P Global in 2011 and Fitch in 2023. All have the US government at their second-highest rating.
