One of the most hated summertime weedy vines in Louisiana is the bushkiller vine, Cayratia japonica. Sometimes called “sorrel vine” and often confused for Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans), bushkiller vine can be found increasingly throughout the southeastern part of Louisiana. It is an invasive species that is native to southeast Asia, and it can be found in Texas and California in addition to Louisiana. It is a high climbing, smothering vine that can quickly cover a fence line, young trees, shrubs, and garden plants if left unchecked.
