While the Louisiana Oyster Task Force strongly supports smart coastal restoration efforts, we continue to oppose the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion (MBSD), knowing that it will deposit excessive amounts of freshwater altering salinity levels that will disrupt oyster growth, harvests, and overall sustainability. Both science and decades of living and working on the water demonstrate these facts.

Thankfully our insurance commissioner Jim Donelon is retiring. He seems to have lost sight of his duty to protect the citizens of Louisiana from predatory insurance companies and as a result has placed us at risk.

When the big issues are at stake, it seems like there’s always a Louisiana connection. The Louisiana Purchase, the Battle of New Orleans, the first shot of the Civil War was fired by a Louisiana Brigade.

Following up on last week’s listing of all the candidates running for statewide offices, this week we’ll concentrate on the local races, since I agree with Tip O’Neil, the 47th Speaker of the US House of Representatives, “All politics is local.” You can double-check last week’s column by going to the Secretary of State’s website (https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/ candidateinquiry) to find contact information. If you’re using my columns to research the candidates and narrow down your choices, why not save it, and bring the St Bernard Voice with you to vote? You would be better off than taking someone else’s ballot telling you who to vote for in this very important election.
