If you are growing your kitchen garden in a small space, or maybe even using containers to grow in, succession planting may be a good strategy to learn to implement to get the most out of your garden space. Most of the information I’ve been able to find on succession planting is for more “up north” parts of the country that have only one, usually short, growing season. In our area, succession planting can happen at any time in our year-round growing season. I’ve found it makes sense with some of the cool season crops that can either be prone to bolting in a heat wave (lettuces, spinach, cilantro), and for crops that have a relatively short daysto- harvest period (leafy greens, radish, beets). It’s all about maximizing yield in small spaces and insuring a continual harvest.
