Nunez Community College in Chalmette will welcome New Orleans civil rights leader Leona Tate to speak at the college in celebration of Black History Month as part of its Pelican Leadership Institute professional development series.

What gets the people of the metropolitan area going in a good way? Several things! New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras, Easter, Jazz Fest, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are the major events. At this time of year, there is that special air of Mardi Gras. Even though there are many places in the world that celebrate the event and many definitions of its meaning and origin, we celebrate with a purpose of enjoyment. Europe has its more subdued celebration, and Brazil sets the world standard for a dance and flesh extravaganza. In America, New Orleans is the first place winner. Mobile claims the first Mardi Gras around 1703, in the new world. Again, the New Orleans region sets a world class standard of partying.
