St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame Humanitarian of the Year

Jimmy Besson
By Ethan Simmons
Stepping into Jimmy Besson’s house is like visiting a beloved relative. Little dogs swarm as Jimmy rolls around constantly receiving phone calls. It is obvious his life has had an impact on the Parish and beyond. This year, the St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame is honoring Besson as Humanitarian of the Year. Twenty-five years ago he began a project called Jimmy’s Kids in Chalmette, which originally helped disabled children overcome the challenges of everyday life. Besson’s voice is an important one in the community. He greets each call personally and excitedly. The laughs from the other end are audible throughout the room. It appears that everyone knows Jimmy on a personal level.
