St. Bernard NAACP asks school board to rename Andrew Jackson Middle
Members of the St. Bernard Parish Chapter of the NAACP appeared at the Aug. 11 St. Bernard School Board meeting to request that the board change the name of Andrew Jackson Middle School.
Kesia Rodney, an NAACP member and former school board candidate, noted Jackson’s role in local history leading American forces to victory at the Battle of New Orleans, but contrasted that with historical texts describing Jackson as a “harsh” slave owner at his plantation in Tennessee. She shared a historical anecdote about Jackson taking out an ad seeking the return of a runaway slave in which he offered an additional $10 for every 100 lashes the slave’s would-be captors inflicted upon him.
