St. Bernard Council to Send Application for $3 Million
At an unplanned “Special Council Meeting” on Monday, Sept. 28, the St. Bernard Council unanimously approved an ordinance that would send a grant application for $3 million dollars to the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) Cares Act Recovery Assistance program.
The project would use the EDA money as funding for a boulevard connecting W Judge Perez to W St. Bernard Highway. Due to the fact that the EDA Cares Act Recovery Assistance grant requires “economic development assistance programs to” have a “health care component” in or der to “help communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to [the] Coronavirus,” the council plans to have the boulevard act as an “access route” between W St. Bernard Highway and the St. Bernard Parish Hospital. This additional “connectivity” serves as their justification to the EDA to receive this federal grant money.
