Residents Speak Against Violet Container Terminal at School Board Meeting

In response to the Port of New Orleans beginning the process to build a container terminal by acquiring the Violet Dock from the Port of St. Bernard (a development that would, if it materializes into reality, force W. Smith Elementary School to relocate), multiple parish residents voiced their desire for the St. Bernard School Board to oppose the container terminal at the January 12 General Committee meeting.

Thomas Johnson highlighted multiple concerns he and residents of Violet had about the potential container terminal’s impact on W. Smith Elementary.

He stated that W. Smith Elementary has the highest percentage of African American students in the parish, the lowest test scores, the highest percentage of special education students, and the highest percentage of students on free lunch. If the container terminal were built, it would destroy a school that provides essential programs to some of St. Bernard’s most underprivileged populations.
