QUALIFYING CANDIDATES FOR THE FALL 2019 ELECTION
As of press time Wednesday, the 2019 election was shaping up to be the year of the unopposed incumbent in St. Bernard Parish.
The qualifying period for parish and state candidates to be included on the Oct. 12 ballot remained open until the end of the business day Thursday, Aug. 8. But by the end of business on Aug. 7, District D Parish Council member Wanda Alcon and Coroner Bryan Bertucci, both Democrats, were the only parish officials to qualify for another term who had drawn challengers—Republican Andrew Hunt Jr. of Meraux for District D and Republican Gregory Fernandez of Slidell for coroner.
Parish President Guy McInnis, Sheriff James Pohlmann, Clerk of Court Randy Nunez, Assessor Jaylynn Bergeron Turner, Ward C Justice of the Peace Tina Micheu, At Large East Parish Council member Kerri Callais, At Large West council member Richie Lewis, District A council member Gillis McCloskey and District C council member Howard Luna all qualified Aug. 6 for another term in their respective offices and were unopposed through Aug. 7. McInnis said he was fine with running unopposed, but wasn’t allowing himself to get comfortable before Thursday’s deadline passed.
