March 30 ballot features SBSO tax renewals, two elections
On March 30 St. Bernard Parish will hold an election to decide on a pair of tax renewals for the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, School Board member for District 6 and Justice of the Peace for Ward C.
The SBSO is seeking 10-year renewals on a .5 percent sales tax to fund salaries, training, juvenile and narcotics programs and four substations and renewal of five mills for salary increases and benefits for patrol deputies, detectives, narcotics agents, corrections officers and communication officers.
The special election for the District 6 school board seat features sitting interim board member Carolon Craft, a democrat, facing off against republican Carly Jackson. Craft’s late husband, Dr. Hugh Craft, was unopposed for reelection when he passed in October 2018. Because Dr. Craft’s death occurred just prior to the Nov. 6 election, his name could not be removed from the ballot. The St. Bernard Public School Board appointed Carolon Craft to serve in the interim until a special election could be organized.
