Let freedom Ring!
A diverse gathering of several St. Bernard Parish firefighters, the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Greater St. Bernard Chapter, St. Bernard Business & Professional Women’s Club members, various residents, Parish President Guy McInnis and Council Member Wanda Alcon of District D rung in the July 4 holiday during the BPW Club’s Bell Ceremony last Saturday. The bell located in front of the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center and SBPG Government Complex buildings in Chalmette was originally a gift from the organization in 1977. St. Bernard members, Olga Dugas and Louise Gorbaty, co-chaired a fundraiser to purchase the Whitehall Bell Foundry’s Liberty Bell replica; dedicating it to St. Bernard Parish residents in time for the nation’s bicentennial celebration. Following tradition, the bell can be heard chiming annually on July 4 and September 11. Photos by Amber Prattini Wallo
