Council unanimously denies street name change

For the second time in as many weeks, the St. Bernard Parish Council has shot down a proposal to renameColonial Boulevard in Violet after Martin Luther King.  The measure was removed from the agenda on Aug. 4 when District D Council Member Casey Hunnicutt said he was informed that the parish lacked the authority to rename the street because it qualified as a state highway under the Submerged Roads Program. Several residents took issue with Hunnicutt for removing the item from that meeting’s agenda, suggesting the move was an attempt  o do away with the  controversial measure.
