Children’s Day at St. Bernard Parish Library
Children and their parents participated in a cultural celebration on Saturday, May 11 at the St. Bernard Parish Library in Chalmette.
Children’s Day, known as “kodomo no hi,” is a national holiday in Japan which fosters the creative growth of the next generation and celebrates children’s happiness. Held annually in early May, cloth carp streamers, or “koinobori,” are flown on poles outside of buildings and houses to bring good fortune to the youth inside.
Attendees listened to the adventure of folktale hero, Momotar›, the Peach Boy; learned how to count in Japanese, created their own koinobori and origami, and were taught more about the connection and friendship between the United States and Japan.
