Battle of New Orleans Anniversary Commemoration Events Carry On
Despite the federal government’s partial shutdown, local events to commemorate the two hundred and fourth Battle of New Orleans (BNO) anniversary continue in St. Bernard.
With the challenge of national parks and its visitor services across the country being halfway or completely closed, the wreath laying ceremony and living history reenactments taking place at the Chalmette Battlefield, a site of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve; seemed unlikely to happen.
Yet, parish officials, businesses and various groups formulated several creative solutions by moving the ceremony to the armed forces monument in front of the Frederic Sigur Center and the re-enactments to Torres Park in Chalmette. They also began a new tradition: 7 a.m. breakfast every January 8.
