According to St. Bernard Parish government ordinance, there are specific times when fireworks can legally be used in the parish surrounding the New Year’s celebration. On Dec. 31, fireworks can legally be used from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m. On Jan. 1, fireworks can be used from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., at which time all use of fireworks must end for the New Year’s period. Any use outside these hours would be considered illegal disturbing of the peace. When considering your fireworks purchases this year, don’t forget that Goofy AJ’s Fireworks is back! For over 30 years St. Bernard has been missing out on one of the original Firework Stands of St. Bernard Parish, owned by the Duvio’s of St. Bernard Parish.

St. Bernard Parish Hospital, managed by Ochsner Health, began vaccinating its frontline healthcare workers against COVID-19 on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Vaccinations are voluntary and in this first phase as outlined by the state and the CDC, only those employees with direct COVID-19 exposure are eligible. The vaccines are by Pfizer, and will require a second dose 21 days following the first shot for full protection.

Ochsner kicked off the holiday season this year by donating 600 “windowed” masks to the St. Bernard Public Schools. The clear vinyl window in the center of each cloth mask follows all CDC guidelines but removes one of the traditional drawbacks with mask wearing. The new masks allow those in the classroom to see the lips and facial expressions of the user - important components in the educational process, especially for younger students, special education students and those learning English as a second language.

Despite a multitude of potential setbacks—namely, Covid-19 restrictions and the power outages caused by Hurricane Zeta— St. Bernard was able to go through with the 2020 election on Tuesday, November 3. While a good portion of votes came in either through mail-in ballots or early voting, those who wished to wait until Election Day were able to vote on Tuesday.
