Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez receives Kiwanis Club Life Saver Award
St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jennifer Gutierrez received the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi Life Saver Award at a banquet hosted by Kiwanis on Jan. 15 at Rocky and Carlo’s Restaurant in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Kiwanis Life Saver Committee Chairman Sam Catalanotto said Lt. Gutierrez, a 20-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office who is a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, was honored for her efforts to save an infant born prematurely at his mother’s Chalmette home in November, 2018.
On the afternoon of Nov. 17, Sheriff Pohlmann said, the Sheriff’s Office received a call about a female who was going into labor at 23 weeks gestation and having complications.
Lt. Gutierrez, who was off duty at the time, was the first to arrive on the scene. The mother had delivered the baby, but he was not responsive so Lt. Gutierrez quickly cleared his airway and started CPR.
