I know it’s hot and terrible outside, but it is prime time to start prepping the fall garden. Early August is a strategic time to get your brassicas and some other crops rolling for “round two,” which would be the equivalent of the midspring northern growing season. Our pattern is a little different, we can do another crop of tomatoes, potatoes, squashes, beans, and sweet corn before frost here as the days grow shorter and temperatures gradually fall. The “days to harvest” for these things runs around 75 to 130 days, giving us plenty of time to plant and pick before the historical first frost date, which is usually between December 9 and December 27. It’s also time to prep seedlings for the brassica crops- Brussels sprouts, caulifl ower, broccoli, collards, and kale. These things can be succession planted, with new transplants going in every few weeks to extend the harvest. Cool season herbs can be started too, including fennel, dill, cilantro, savory, parsley, cutting celery, and sorrel. There’s a lot to do right now, don’t sleep!
