PEACE & JUSTICE

Body
Regular readers of my weekly columns know that I write about a cross-section of issues, from politics to good eating, insurance issues, heroes, the joys of living in the country, and even who I think killed JFK. I don’t often write about spiritual issues. But hey, give me a little leeway here. I’m eighty-three and maybe it’s time to get right with the Lord. Remember the song by Beatles’ George Harrison who wrote:

CALLING IT HOME

Body
As I began to think about my column for the week I realized the clock has ticked for the fall early voting. This Saturday begins the future of St. Bernard Parish for the next four years and more than likely the following four more. Your vote is your right guaranteed by the US Constitution and the tool you have to shape your community. This election has candidates from the Governor on down to your district council person. It is very important to vote. With the statewide elections, our small parish population will have little to do with influencing the outcome. But remember, your vote in St. Bernard will determine your State Representative and one of the two Senators that represent the Parish. With the election of a new Governor for the state, it is critical to have officials in Baton Rouge who have the skill to bring home the bacon. Baton Rouge is completely different politically from Parish government. The Capital is still a good old boy's game and can swallow another lawmaker in a few seconds. In our St. Bernard candidate's election, your vote counts immensely. Use it wisely.
