A new building for the St. Bernard Parish branch of a state agency is causing concern among residents and at least one Parish Councilman. The state’s decision to move the Metropolitan Human Services District into a former bank building on St. Claude Avenue has residents and business owners wondering what will happen to Old Arabi. The idea of a mental health clinic opening near the Orleans Parish line has conjured images of long lines of unstable people waiting for drugs, but those worries are unfounded, said MHSD Executive Director Yolanda Webb at a town hall meeting Tuesday night. The St. Bernard office, which does not dispense medication, has been open since 2007 and has largely gone unnoticed. However, concerns over the agency’s presence in the parish erupted after recent news that a “clinic” would be opening in Arabi.
