St. Bernard Parish officials and Meraux Foundation board members broke ground Tuesday on the first phase of a recreational wetlands boathouse facility that the parish government hopes will blossom into an ecotourism mecca for St. Bernard. The facility will feature an 1,800 square foot boathouse where patrons can rent paddle boats for a ride in the 40 Arpent Canal or a 6-foot-deep man-made lagoon. A 60-foot dock will provide access to the Central Wetlands by boat while a 10-foot-wide steel pedestrian bridge will span the canal to a boardwalk on the other side. The boathouse site is part of a larger series of wetland restoration projects by a number of agencies aimed at a 30,000 acre tract of swamp between St. Bernard Parish and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.
